HAS TD STOPPED PAYING YOU SHORT TERM DISABILITY IN ONTARIO?

HAS TD STOPPED PAYING YOU SHORT TERM DISABILITY IN ONTARIO?

The Toronto-Dominion Bank is a Canadian multinational banking and financial services corporation headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.  The bank and it’s subsidiaries have over 89,000 employees and 26 million clients worldwide.  In Canada the bank operates as TD Canada Trust and serves more than 11 million customers.

TD offers many of its employees short-term and long-term disability benefits through Manulife.  Usually, TD is responsible for the payment of short-term disability benefits and the claim is administered by Manulife.  The claim is supposed to transition into long term disability and the benefits are then paid by Manulife.

TD employees who are receiving short term disability benefits are often surprised and frustrated when Manulife terminates their benefits before the transition to long term disability takes place.  Manulife often makes this decision based on the opinions of doctors it hires who have never met the claimant.  TD then follows Manulife’s decision and stops paying short-term disability benefits to its employee.

The termination of disability benefits can put claimants in further financial jeopardy and serve to increase their stress, anxiety and depression levels.

Manulife offer’s an internal appeal process that serves to further frustrate TD employees who are disabled.  We do not recommend that claimants engage in the internal appeal process as we have rarely seen denials overturned by its use.
