How long you are entitled to receive long term disability benefits depends on the wording of the insurance policy. Most policies provide for disability payments up to age 65 if you meet the definition of total disability. Some policies have shorter benefit periods and a few provide for payments beyond age 65.

Coverage for disability is governed by the insurance policy. In general long term disability policies will provide for payment for any type of illness or sickness that prevents you for performing the essential tasks of your employment and for payment after two years if you are prevented from performing any employment that you are suited to by way of education, training or experience. Some covered ailments include depression, anxiety, chronic pain, heart disease, cancer, fibromyalgia, migraines, IBS, organ failure, strokes, inflammatory disorders and neurological impairments.

Insurance companies often deny short term disability claims. Some reasons insurance companies give are:

  • There is insufficient medical evidence.
  • Video surveillance shows you doing things you said you couldn’t do.
  • Your social media posts show you as active and not showing signs of depression.
