How to prove that you are disabled when applying for long term disability benefits

An illness or accident can prevent you from working.  If you are fortunate enough to have a long term disability policy through work or privately it is important to know what you must do in order to increase your chances of your disability claim being approved.  Here are some helpful hints.

  1.  Have medical evidence that you suffer from a disabling illness or condition.
  2.  Follow the treatment recommendations of your doctors.
  3.  Understand the definition of disability as set out in your insurance policy.  Most often for the first two years you must prove that your are disabled from performing the essential tasks of your employment.  After two years the test may change to whether you are totally disabled from performing any gainful occupation that you are suited by education training or experience.
  4. Understand that your disability insurance company may use surveillance or your social media posts to discredit you and show that aren’t as disabled as you say.
