How you speak with your doctor is of utmost importance when you are applying for short term disability and long term disability benefits. While it is important for your doctor to diagnose what you are suffering from, disability insurance companies will look through your medical records to see how your impairments actually affect your ability to function.
Therefore it is important to tell your doctor how your disability impacts your activities of daily living. For example if you are unable to do aspects of your normal housekeeping or home maintenance let your doctor know.
Let your doctor know how your pain or depression has changed your life and not just the fact that you are in pain or sad or anxious.
It is important to follow your doctor’s advice with respect to medication, treatment and therapy. If you are unable to do so you should let your doctor know why so that an alternate action plan can be developed.
Remember your doctor is required to make notes of what you say and those notes will be shared with your disability insurance company.
A failure to attend regularly at your doctor’s office will lead to a lack of documented complaints and even an assumption that you are fine.
If you have been denied short term or long term disability benefits by a disability insurance company you are no doubt feeling fatigued by the process. At Kotak Law we are committed to helping people access the disability benefits they have been denied and we understand your frustration with your disability insurance company.
