HAS RBC STOPPED PAYING YOU SHORT TERM DISABILITY IN ONTARIO?

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is a Canadian multinational financial services company and the largest bank in Canada. RBC serves approximately ten million clients through its more than 1200 branches.

RBC offers many of its employees short-term and long-term disability benefits through Manulife. Usually, RBC is responsible for the payment of short-term disability benefits and the claim is administered by Manulife. The claim is supposed to transition into long term disability and the benefits are then paid by Manulife.

RBC employees who are receiving short term disability benefits are often surprised and upset when Manulife stops their benefits before the transition to long term disability takes place. Manulife often makes this decision based on the opinions of doctors or nurses it hires who have never met the claimant. They will send a letter stating that there is insufficient medical evidence to support the claim for short term disability. RBC then follows Manulife’s decision and stops paying short-term disability benefits to its employee.

The termination of disability benefits can put claimants in further financial ruin and serve to increase their stress, anxiety and depression and frustration levels.

Manulife offer’s an internal appeal process that often serves to further deny RBC employees who are disabled. We do not recommend that claimants engage in the internal appeal process as we have rarely seen denials overturned by its use.
