PTSD and Disability Claims

According to the Mayo Clinic PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental condition that is triggered by witnessing or experiencing a terrifying event. Some symptoms are flashbacks, nightmares and intrusive memories.

PTSD may influence other conditions such as depression.  People suffering from PTSD may have feelings of hopelessness and have difficulties in relationships with others.

The Canadian Mental Health Association states that PTSD can make people feel edgy or nervous all the time. Many sufferers have difficulty sleeping and have a hard time concentrating.

According to the American Psychiatric Association Foundation Centre for Work Place Mental Health, those with PTSD have greater rates of work place absenteeism and an increased likelihood of unemployment.

Unfortunately, many people who suffer from PTSD suffer in silence.  Many are overwhelmed and unable to work due to the magnitude of their symptoms.  Often disability insurance companies will deny disability claims based on PTSD on the grounds that there is insufficient medical evidence, or that the worker is not seeking the appropriate treatment.
