Failure to Obtain Medical Treatment and Follow Your Doctor's Advice Could Hurt Your Ontario Disability Claim

Most short term and long term disability insurance policies state that in order for you to receive benefit payments you must not only report your symptoms to your physician but also comply with the treatment recommendations that your doctor gives you.

Furthermore, if you have not told your doctor about the condition that is preventing you from working, your disability insurance company will conclude that you can work at your own job or another one.

Sometimes your family doctor will refer you to a specialist or prescribe medication or physiotherapy.  Not following your doctor’s treatment protocol could be fatal to your disability claim in Ontario.

If you cannot do the treatment that your doctor is directing you should follow up with them and explain why. Sometimes you may have valid reason, such as that the prescribed medication is causing severe side effects.  Additionally, you may not have the financial resources to pay for treatments such as extensive physiotherapy.  Report this to your doctor and they may then order more suitable treatment options depending on your situation.

You should keep records of all the treatment you have tried including medication, supplements,  physiotherapy, naturopathic medication, acupuncture, counselling, chiropractors, aqua therapy, social workers, psychologists, etc.
